Students Inspire Future Generations Through Traineeship
Chloe Thompson, a student at St Joseph’s College in Toowoomba, is considering a career in teaching and was thrilled to embark on her School-Based Apprenticeship (SBA) at St Stephen’s School in Pittsworth. Chloe is studying for a Certificate III in School-Based Education Support, and this opportunity is not just a stepping stone but a chance to immerse herself in the world of education and gain hands-on experience. Chloe is acquiring invaluable experience that is shaping her future and those of her young students.
Chloe's journey began in April this year when she stepped into the classrooms of St Stephen's School. She was assigned to assist in the early years classroom and has been involved in working with small groups, organising engaging activities, and providing one-on-one support to students.
This opportunity is particularly special for Chloe, as she was once a student at this very same school.
“It’s great to be back in my old school. I love seeing the children grow and learn,” said Chloe.
Chloe's experience at St Stephen's is not just about gaining skills; it's about making a difference in the lives of her students. Reflecting on the profound impact this experience has had on her, she said, "I’ve learned that teaching is not just a job; it’s a calling," filled with hope for her future in education.
St Stephen’s School also has another SBA student, Olivia Fowler from St Saviour’s College, who is enjoying her time working with the students and getting a head start on her future career.

As Chloe and Olivia’s traineeship progresses, their enthusiasm and dedication have not gone unnoticed. Janine Butlin, Principal of St Stephen’s School, praised the students’ natural talent for teaching, stating, "They have a gift for connecting with students and fostering their growth."
Both Chloe and Olivia will conclude their traineeships at the end of 2025. They are shining examples of how passion and dedication can lead to meaningful change in the community. Their journey is just beginning and the future looks bright for these aspiring teachers as they strive for success.
For over two decades, the Toowoomba Catholic Schools Office (TCSO) has been supporting students in building rewarding careers through the undertaking of a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship. The coordinated approach of the schools and TCSO have ensured that the benefits of SBAs to schools, students, employers, parents and the wider community are well known; and students are very well supported to incorporate an SBA as part of their personalised senior schooling learning plan.
