Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education plan – schools taking action
On Wednesday 18 March, thirty people attended the professional learning opportunity, Implementing the new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Plan 2017-2020, at Picnic Point.
Dancers, Winangali Infusion opened the day, Acknowledging Country and sharing traditional dances, language and cultural knowledge.
The first half of the day contextualised the Plan with Aboriginal speakers Glenda Humes and Joshua Waters developing audience understandings of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, cultures and worldview. This gave the audience a broader understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education.
The second half of the day focussed on effective teaching and learning practices and unpacking the Plan.
Evaluations were overwhelmingly positive with comments such as ‘points raised need to be addressed at all schools and all staff inserviced,’ and ‘excellent day and much needed.’
